-- ...and From the Pearl --

Persistent, indefatigable IBWO searcher Mike Collins, in a post to BirdChat offers to accompany other birders out to his previous "hot zone" for the birds along the Pearl River (La.), when he returns there next month for work. He can take people through his workplace, Stennis Space Center, offering easier access than would otherwise be the case.

He identifies the approximate location of this 'hot zone' with this map linked to from his website:

From the Web Grab Bag:

American Airlines take note: A record-breaking Bar-tailed Godwit was recently tracked as flying over 7100 mi. non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand... without losing any luggage.

The spreading menace of red fire ants are having highly deleterious effects on songbird nesting success according to this report:

You seem to believe it's scientific for you to say flatly that they LIVE, but it's terrible science for skeptics to say they think they are probably extinct.

Have things gone the way you thought they would when you first heard the announcement? No. That's because the bird almost certainly doesn't exist.

Belief is plummeting, and for good reason.
Other than my blog title (chosen before all this controversy arose) I DON'T say "flatly" that they live, I say the probabilities favor their existence (be there one or 100 left). "Extinction" is an absolute, and I doubt any other species has ever been proclaimed extinct with as many sightings claims as there are for IBWO.
"Belief" in evolution is also pretty low in this country; not necessarily for good reason.
Cognitive dissonance
